STUDENTS from Coleg Gwent have won places at the UK finals of a hair and beauty competition after winning six silver and two bronze medals at the regional Welsh heats.

Hair and beauty students from both City of Newport and Cross Keys campuses took part in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapist competition taking part in timed styling for hair, makeup, body painting and nails.

Charlotte Ballinger, theatrical make-up student, 19, achieved silver in the bodypainting category for her look inspired by women’s power suits.

Other winners included Lauren Thomas, of Llanwern High School, and Sophie Bartlett, of St Julian’s School, who took silver and bronze in the ladies’ evening-style hairup schools category.

Louis Jones, 26, hairdressing student, won silver for the bridal hair team, while Dominique Willis, 19, beauty therapy student, won silver in the bridal make-up team event.

Jessica Williams, 18, and Alicia Thorne were awarded silver and bronze medals for their classic 1960s make-up looks, and Viktorija Skinkyte, 22, beauty student, achieved silver in the nails category.

The finals of the AHT competition will be held in Blackpool on March 18.
