Parents urged to get off treadmill

PARENTS are smothering their children, leaving them unable to cope by themselves as they grow up, Prime Minister David Cameron's adviser on childhood has said.

Claire Perry, the MP for Devizes, said children's lives are too regimented with organised activities, and parents were shying away from laying down the law to their children.

Mrs Perry, 48, is Mr Cameron's adviser on the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood.

In an interview with The Times the mother of three also hit out at parents' lack of knowledge over what their children were doing online.

"We've created a treadmill, it's usually the mother that is orchestrating all of that and doing all the driving," said Mrs Perry.

"We have created rods for our own back. Children need time to be bored."

Mrs Perry, who took a seven-year break from her career in management consulting when her children were young, said mothers were often behind youngsters' cosseting because their own careers struggle when they start a family.

She said: "A lot of it is women who, because it is difficult to get on, subjugate their own ambition into their kids.

"That makes it harder when they get to university and realise they haven't got a mother to help them with their homework, watching their every move.

"We've all done it. Now, I just can't, so I don't, and I think they're probably better off as a result."

About time. Too often parents are at the mercy of their offspring so its time to switch & take charge again - a reality check is long overdue!

Can't see where it says she had a Nanny some parents don't like being told much like their kids.

Hmmm. This woman needs to back off and mind her own business. Who is she to tell people how to bring up their kids? She wants to start with the very man who left his daughter in a pub and forgot about her !

Hmmm. Given that its unlikely that any of Cameron's kids are the subject of ASBOs or are junkies or vandals, I'm quite sure his parenting skills are better than a sizeable number of parents in Wales.

You know that do you??? I dont think either she's paid a disgusting amount of money - there are plenty of people in local authorities paid similar.

Yes, she may have a nanny, plenty of people do, plenty of people also have full time childcare, childminders and Au pairs & grandparents shall we count these in too as non-parents??? She's an earning woman what's so bad about that?

I see it with parents with young children, too frightened to upset them, cant say no, let them boss their parents around, decide what they eat...all pathetic inconsistent wet parenting.

As an employer I see these wet pathetic specimens of so called young men. They cant make decisions, cant cope with instructions, very sad.

I totally agree, letting children be bored finding their own entertainment, play in the garden, make a mess with paper and pens. I havent got the time nor the inclination to drive and sit around while my children are solidly entertained every night of the week and I'm not ashamed of it.
