Caerphilly Council to write off £55,000 owed by bust firms

CAERPHILLY council is set to write off over £55,000 of money owed to it by companies that have gone bust.

Monnington Leisure, which traded from the Maes Manor Hotel, Blackwood until November 16 2011 owed rates of £35,233.99p, which covered the period between April and November that year.

Demands were issued to the company and a payment arrangement plan was agreed. As these were initially being paid, no bailiffs were involved.

But, only £5,388 of this was paid back before it went into administration, leaving the outstanding balance of £29,845.99p.

A report to Caerphilly’s cabinet says it is unlikely it will receive any payment as a result of insolvency proceedings, while there is a similar situation with regards to The Recycling People 2011 (Wales) Ltd.

The company was based on the Heads of the Valleys Industrial Estate, Rhymney and owed rates of £52,740.70p covering the period from April 1 to October 1 2012.

Only £27,537.11p of this was paid back, leaving an outstanding balance of £25,203.59p, with the report again saying it is unlikely any of this will be recoverable.

These monies are included in a half-yearly report to the policy and resources scrutiny committee listing monies due to the council that can’t be paid.

Cabinet, which meets tomorrow (Tuesday) will be recommended to write off the debts on the grounds they are irrecoverable.
