Monmouth pupils enjoy maths with the 'human calculator'

MONMOUTH youngsters put the “human calculator” to the test this week at the launch of the Cardiff World Education Games.
Year 2 pupils fromKymin Primary School, Monmouth, met “human calculator” and World Guinness record holder, Scott Flansburg, at Techniquest in Cardiff, to launch the global online event.
Mr Flansburg, who holds the world record for calculating maths sums faster than a calculator, amazed Kymin youngsters as he performed his high-speed maths show, encouraging pupils to enjoy maths and showing them how they can work out difficult maths problems - without the use of a calculator.
The human calculator was visiting venues around theUKto inspire children and adults to compete in the World Education Games, that will see 5.9 million students participating in three days of literacy, maths and science challenges to become World Champion of Champions.
Kymin primary teacher, Joanna Box, said: “Maths is something pupils tend to either love or hate so it’s great for them to see how interactive it can be as a subject – Scott has helped to make learning maths
fun!”
