Newport photographer scoops wedding award

FIGHT SCENE: Nick Murray’s unusual picture staged at Debbie and Chris Abbott’s wedding FIGHT SCENE: Nick Murray’s unusual picture staged at Debbie and Chris Abbott’s wedding

MOST couples would dread a fight on their big day, but a wedding photographer from Newport had his camera at the ready as one broke out.

OK, so the fight may have been a staged one agreed by the bride and groom, but it certainly makes for a memorable photo.

And now Nick Murray, a former graphic designer, has been recognised for his talent of capturing the happy day for couples across South Wales, winning Wedding of the Year 2012 for Your South Wales Wedding magazine.

He said: “I’m pretty stoked because the magazine covers such a huge area. It was nice of everyone across Newport, Cardiff and Swansea to vote for me.

“But I can’t take all the credit though, because as cheesy as it sounds, it’s the brides and grooms that I work with that make my wedding photography such a joy to shoot.”

Mary and Lee Weston were the loved-up couple who won the Wedding of the Year 2012 title, and Mr Murray made their romantic family-friendly day picture perfect.

Their wedding took place at the picturesque Canada Lake and Lodge in Creigiau, Cardiff in June last year.

Mr Murray has been a wedding photographer for five years after taking on the role of photographer for a family wedding.

He said: “I loved it, and have been doing it ever since.

It’s an amazing art form. I always try to be innovative to attract the coolest couples. It also keeps it exciting for me.”

One photo, which certainly catches people’s attention, is a shot inspired by the works of photographer David LaChapelle, who was offered his first photography job by Andy Worhol.

A fight scene was staged for ‘happy’ couple Debbie and Chris Abbott as the groom is a big fan of the striking images of LaChapelle.

The wedding took place in May last year in All Saints Church in Cwmbran, and Mr Murray was all too pleased to snap away at the chaotic scene with bridesmaids and best men also getting in on the action.

Mr Murray was also voted Best Photographer at the V Awards 2012 and a review last year for Oh So Perfect Weddings descried him as “One of the most creative and inspirational photographers in Wales, if not the UK.”
