EXOTIC: Jon Sullivan, of Vun Sullivan’s in Blaenavon is selling unusual meats lincluding zebra, crocodile and locust
HORSEMEAT may have been in the headlines for the past few months, but for one specialist food supplier in Blaenavon zebra is very much on the menu for gourmands.
Vin Sullivan Butcher’s is a family butcher which specialises in exotic meats and fresh fish.
With meats ranging from python to crocodile and kangaroo, shoppers have plenty from which to choose.
Starting off as a retail fishmongers and greengrocers in Abergavenny in 1960, supplying local customers, the butcher’s developed into a specialist food company – supplying businesses throughout the UK and abroad from its base in Blaenavon.
Vin Sullivan decided to broaden its meat selection after the BSE crisis.
Jon Sullivan, who has been working at the butcher’s for 50 years, said: “We started dealing in exotic meats as people are always looking for something a bit different.”
Now at Vin Sullivan’s, zebra steaks, from South Africa, seem to be the most popular. The butcher’s sells on average 20-30 a week.
The zebra is a deep-red haunch steak that is high in protein and iron but low in fat. Steaks cost £4.50.
