A NEW food bank in Caldicot, which starts collecting goods on Tuesday, could feed more than 350 people in its first year, according to organisers Churches Together.

The Churches Together projects from Caldicot, Caerwent, Portskewett and Rogiet estimate the food bank could help people in Magor and Undy as well.

Although not yet fully operational, the Caldicot food bank will work in cooperation with Waitrose.

There will be a second collection on Saturday, March 30, in Caldicot, and the organisers hope to operate at full capacity afterwards.

A meeting to discuss the collection will take place at 3pm on Sunday in the Methodist Church, Caldicot.

The food the public are asked to donate includes tins of fish or meat, UHT milk and tinned fruit and vegetables.

The nutritionally balanced food parcels are designed to last three days and are only given where agencies such as health visitors, the probation service or a housing association have provided a voucher.

The food bank will be working under the auspices of the Raven House Trust, a Newport charity which has food banks at Cromwell Road, Bettws and at Stow Park Church, Newport.

Places to store the food and metal shelving are needed.
