A MAN has lost sight in one eye after a bottle hit the windscreen of his car near Abergavenny.

The driver, a 57 and passenger, a 54-year-old man, both from Tredegar were travelling from Raglan when they heard a loud bang and felt pain in their eyes.

They were on the B4598 from Raglan to Abergavenny in a silver Volkswagen Passat at around 7pm on Wednesday when the incident happened.

They found a hole in the windscreen and broken glass from a bottle inside the car which had hit the car and come through the windscreen.

The driver and the passenger were bleeding and went to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

The driver was kept in hospital for six days and will never have 100% sight in his right eye again and may never regain sight in it at all. The passenger also received cuts to both eyes.

When the victims heard the bang, a car was travelling past them in the opposite direction – it may have been a silver car.

At the moment the incident is being treated as an assault and officers are keeping an open mind as to whether the glass bottle was thrown deliberately from another vehicle.

Police believe the victims were near the turning to Clytha when it happened. There were also two cars some distance ahead of them at the time.

Detective Constable Rosie Vincent is investigating said: “This really is a shocking incident and has obviously had a devastating impact on the victims.

We need anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward. They may have seen items being thrown from another car window or another vehicle driving erratically in the area.

We’re treating this as an assault at the moment and it demonstrates just how dangerous throwing items out of a vehicle can be – whether it be with the intent of hitting someone/another vehicle or not.”

Gwent Police would like anyone who may have been in the area at the time, saw the incident, any vehicle being driven erratically or items being thrown to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
