THE brother of a Newport dad who died in a sledging accident will cycle 500 miles to raise money for a charity in his memory.

Father-of-one Anthony Farley, of Broadmead Park, was just 19 years old when the toboggan he was riding down a bank with his friend David Roberts near Chartist Way, Tredegar, slid into the path of a car in February 2010.

A Tredegar man was jailed for 12 months in January 2011 after admitting causing death by driving while unlicensed and uninsured and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Now three years on his brother Ryan and friend Robert Shipley, both 23, will cycle from the Spanish city of Barcelona to Nice in France in just seven days starting on June 8.

The pair, who ride 100 miles every Saturday as part of their training, are no strangers to the saddle having enjoyed many weekends away cycling all over the UK.

This year they decided to step up the challenge by going abroad and because the journey is so long, chose to use it as an opportunity to support a good cause.

The friends chose road safety charity Brake in tribute to Mr FarleyÕs brother and to raise awareness of the dangers of the road.

And if that wasnÕt enough, a few weeks later on June 22 - two days after what would have been his brotherÕs 23rd birthday Ð Mr Farley will complete a sponsored sky dive at Swansea airfield.

He said his family, including six brothers and sisters, have been really supportive of the challenge and said he hopes to do his brother proud.

He said: "All the family are over the moon with it, and are proud we are doing it.
"Anthony would probably think I was mad to be honest, but I think he would be happy."
