NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have signed former Wales hooker Rhys Thomas.

The 30-year-old heads to Rodney Parade from London Wasps, who he joined from Cardiff Blues last summer.

The Aviva Premiership outfit have agreed to release the 27-times capped front row forward from his contract because he was finding it difficult to be away from his family.

Thomas will battle for the number 2 jersey with Hugh Gustafson, Sam Parry and Elliot Dee, providing some welcome experience following last week's retirement of veteran hooker Steve Jones.

Thomas said: “I am really gutted to be leaving Wasps after a year because from a rugby point of view it’s been a fantastic experience and I’ve loved every minute of it.

"I did, though, completely underestimate how difficult it would be to be away from my three kids and my wife, who weren’t able to move up with me.

"Travelling back and forth has been really tough and I am incredibly grateful to (Wasps head coach) Dai Young and Wasps for understanding the situation I’m in.

"I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped and supported me this season. I am leaving a club that I think is well on the way to becoming a massive force again in English rugby and I am just sorry I can’t be part of it."

The arrival of Thomas fits in with the Dragons' recruitment policy of signing experienced players to aid in the development of their young talent.

He follows the arrivals of scrum-half Richie Rees, fly-half Kris Burton, lock Martin Muller, prop Tetaz Chaparro and number eight Netani Talei.

Head coach Darren Edwards said: "Rhys will be a great addition to our pack of forwards, he brings with him a wealth of experience.

"I am confident he will make a difference on the field and also be a great mentor for our other hookers and young players."
