THESE are the first images that show what Pontypool Market could look like after its major refurbishment this year.

Works to improve the market starts this month, which will remain open throughout the 16 months it will take to complete.

The works will be carried out in phases to minimise disturbance for shoppers.

Vice chairman of the Pontypool Regeneration Partnership, Cllr Lewis Jones, said: “The visuals of how the market will look like have been created by architects Austin Smith Lord, and really help to bring the project to life.

“All the stalls will be refurbished with a greater emphasis on quality food retail.

“Central to the market will be a seating and activity area where regular events and demonstrations will be held.”

The market project follows successful works to Pontypool town centre which have been shortlisted for a national award.

A free event to celebrate the regeneration on the town centre will take place on May 18.

The fun day has been organised to show Torfaen residents what has been done in the town since the £10m Pontypool Settlement Area project was launched.

The event will mark the new public realm space, the work underway to bring the town’s historical buildings back into use, the plans for the Indoor Market and also to showcase the town’s shops and services.

Chair of the Pontypool Regeneration Partnership, Cllr John Marshall, said: “We want to show you what’s been done in Pontypool and what’s coming next. It is your town and this is your chance to enjoy it.”

The celebration event will feature local dance and music acts, face painting, an owl sanctuary and a land train through Pontypool Park.

There will be cooking demonstrations in the market, rugby games with some special guests, go-karts, trampolines and much more.

The project has been supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw, Pontypool Regeneration Partnership and Torfaen County Borough Council.
