Newport brewers, Tiny Rebel to appeal against Swedish bottle ban

The Newport brewery causing quite a storm in Sweden will appeal against a decision to ban one of its beers in the country.
Earlier this month, the Argus reported how Tiny Rebel co-founders Bradley Cummings, 26, and Gareth Williams, 31, received an e-mail from a Swedish government body, the Systembolaget, saying Fubar would have to change its bottle art or the beer would not be sold there.
They said that the Maesglas-based company’s branding did not fit in with government guidelines because the label features a battered teddy with a grenade.
Fubar was the overall silver medal winner at the Great Welsh Beer Festival earlier this year.
The story has since appeared in several media outlets, including the Swedish media, who contacted the Tiny Rebel founders last week.
Mr Cummings said: “We will appeal. I only found out on Friday that we could after the Swedish press phoned us.
“To be honest, they’ve been quite helpful. They were surprised themselves with the decision.”
The company’s first interaction with the Swedes began when Mr Cummings visited the country on a business trip after a potential investor showed interest in their beer.
And the whole of Scandinavia has not been put off it seems. Tiny Rebel, who was only founded in February last year, is exporting more of its beer to Norway on Thursday.
He added: “This is all building up towards a beer festival in Stockholm at the end of September, where we are launching our products, but Fubar might not be there.
“To be honest, we never expected to be exporting, we were only focused on the UK. But now we’re exporting to eight different countries, and we employ six people, who are all from Newport, which I think is great for the city.”
