IT WAS a question of ‘who ate all the pies?’ when a man v pie fundraiser was held at Rodney Parade to raise funds for the Sparkle Appeal.

Caerphilly-based Peter’s Pies donated 100 of the company’s popular products to hungry competitors including Newport Gwent Dragons players and boxer Gavin Rees.

A giant sausage roll measuring 6ft 4ins, courtesy of Peter’s Pies, also featured in the event and was later donated to a homeless centre in Newport.

The competition was organised by Newport-based Watkins and Gunn Solicitors in aid of a 2014 Mount Kilimanjaro climb – involving a number of Gwent business people - to raise funds for the Argus-backed Sparkle Appeal.

Peckish pie-eaters tucked into the mountain of pies in a competitive challenge that was eventually won by Liam Guscott.

A total of £500 was raised through admission and competition entry fees.

A signed pair of boxing gloves from Gavin Rees and a signed rugby ball from the Newport Gwent Dragons were also donated and will now be auctioned off for the cause.

Sparkle was formed in 2003 with the aim of building and equipping a state-of-the-art centre to help the thousands of families in south Gwent caring for a disabled child.

The appeal has led to the building of a purpose built children's centre, Serennu, which provides treatment and assessment facilities, information and leisure activities for more than 1,000 children with complex and special needs in south Gwent.

The Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge has a target of £6,000 to raise for the cause.

Managing partner of Watkins and Gunn Solicitors, Clive Thomas said: “We’re delighted that the challenge was a great success. Everyone really enjoyed the evening and the money raised will contribute to our fundraising targets for the 2014 Mount Kilimanjaro climb in aid of the Sparkle Appeal.

“We would like to thank all those who were involved in the event, especially Peter’s Pies for donating the challenge food.

He added: “The man v pie challenge is just one of many fundraising activities lined up this year and we hope they will all be as successful.”
