NEWS that a well known local business could be sold is, of course, a cause for concern.
And we can imagine that the hundreds of staff at Burton’s Biscuits in Cwmbran are today feeling unsettled and unsure about what the future will hold.
That is only natural.
But we believe that Burton’s Biscuits, which employs more than 2,000 people across the UK, is an attractive prospect for investors and that it still has a bright future.
This is a successful business with a massive turnover and one which remains profitable.
Further, it was not so long ago that we were reporting on a major financial investment at the company’s Llantarnam plant, where 700 people are employed.
The money was spent introducing new baking systems as part of a modernisation programme which has seen millions of pounds invested in the Torfaen factory alone in the past year.
Again this is something in the company’s favour.
And let’s not forget this is a firm with a long and successful history, which remains a success today and which creates some of Britain’s best-loved brands.
So, yes, this is an unsettling time for all connected to the company, but we hope, and believe, that this is just the start of a new chapter for this firm which has employed so many people in this south-east corner of Wales over so many years.
