ARGUS COMMENT: Let's have a proper memorial to the Chartists

CADW has made the right decision in not listing Newport's Chartist mural.
The mural will now be demolished along with the Capitol car park and other parts of John Frost Square before the end of the year as preparations begin in earnest for the Friars Walk shopping centre.
As we have said before, the cost of retaining the mural was too great for the public purse to bear in these times of austerity.
The additional time and money needed to save the mural would almost certainly have put an end to the Friars Walk plans. In our view, that was too great a risk to take.
We know others will hold a different opinion and we respect that.
But what the mural represents is far more important than what it actually is.
The Chartist movement remains a hugely important part of the history of Newport and UK democracy. It deserves to be commemorated properly.
That is why this newspaper will be holding Newport City Council to its promise of creating a new memorial to the Chartists.
We hope the people of Newport have a say in what form such a memorial should take.
And we hope it is constructed somewhere that is easy to access and view - rather than in a less than attractive underpass.
There are many ways of respecting history. A 21st century memorial to the Chartists is one of them.
