ONE of Newport’s oldest companies is gathering past and present employees this Saturday as it celebrates its 140th anniversary.
John Liscombe Limited was established in Newport in 1873, when John Liscombe opened his saddlery shop in Llanarth Street, Newport. Mr Liscombe was elected to Newport Town Council in 1892 and was mayor of Newport in 1906. He had Newport’s mansion house built in the 1890s and lived there until he died in 1914.
Preparations for the party have been underway for the last ten months. Janet Thomas has been working at the company for ten years and been organising the party. She said: “The company has grown in size so much now and we have so many old employees.
“We were quite surprised at how many people we could track down.”
More than 100 people have accepted their invitation to the night of entertainment and reminiscing at the Holiday Inn, Newport this Saturday.
The company have compiled collections of old photographs to make a picture book to be presented to chairman Richard Morris on the night.
The Morris family, current owners of the company began their connection when Albert Morris joined in 1906. Roger Morris, joined the company in 1952 and took the company from glove manufacturing, to the complete PPE distribution company that it is today.
Stephen and Richard Morris, sons of Roger Morris joined the company in the 1980’s and are the current joint managing directors.
In March this year, the Argus reported that Newport seamstress Marion Booth, was celebrating working half a century at the company. At 66, she could have retired, but as long she’s having fun she said she’ll keep on working. She said: “They are just a lovely family firm to work for.”
In the 50 years she had been there, Mrs Booth made an estimated 200,000 pairs of gloves. The head seamstress was recognised for her service to the company in a special ceremony at the company offices, where she was presented with her 50 years’ service certificate and a gift from the members of staff.
Today Liscombe, based in Felnex Industrial estate, is one of the leading distributors of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in the UK.
