THE Newport road where a hole appeared yesterday remains partially closed this morning.
Workmen for Welsh Water were still at Tunnel Terrace in Baneswell this morning and fthe are was at the top of the road was still fenced off. Another piece of fencing had been laid over the hole.
Residents told how raw sewage could be seen running through the Victorian sewage system below, which in turn, is above a railway tunnel.
Pat Wright, who lives in Tunnel Terrace, said: “I’m worried about the state of sewage in this area. I’m worried thinking about my house – I’ve got a basement.
“I’m interested in what Welsh Water will do. They should have checked on the state of the sewers before.”
A spokeswoman for Newport City Council said: “Although the full extent of the damage is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that an emergency road closure will be implemented to enable the necessary repairs to be undertaken.
