A NEWPORT man who was a founding member of the national neighbourhood watch association, has been awarded a British Empire Medal.
John Charles Cox, of Whitstone Road, was presented with the award by Lord Lieutenant Simon Boyle, the Queen’s representative in Gwent, yesterday morning at Newport Civic Centre in the presence of the mayor.
Mr Cox, 87, was awarded the medal for his voluntary work in the Newport Community since the age of 15.
He has been involved in schoolboy football, youth clubs and residents’ associations. But Mr Cox is also a founding member of the National Association of Neighbourhood Watch and the Welsh NHW Association. He went on to start the Gwent NHW and Newport NWH in 1989. He was also chairman of Newport Crime Prevention Panel.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Mr Cox said: “I’m very pleased.”
The British Empire Medal is awarded for military or civil service.
