DO YOU know how much a loaf of bread will set you back?

Prime Minister David Cameron has defended his ignorance after admitting he did not know the price of a "value slice white loaf" when quizzed during a radio show.

He said he prefers to bake his children healthy home-made granary loaves made with local flour, when challenged by LBC presenter Nick Ferrari.

The PM said: "I don't buy the value sliced loaf, I've got a breadmaker at home which I delight in using.

"But you can buy a loaf in the supermarket for well north of a pound."

When told the true price was around 47p, he added: "I don't buy the... look, I'm trying to get my children to eat the sort of granary - and they take it actually, they like my home made bread."

Reporter LAURA FRANKLAND asked shoppers if they knew what a loaf of bread cost.

£1.70, according to Remzi Mustafa, 36, of Camlan Road in Downham said: "Does David Cameron need to know that? I don’t think it’s that much of a big deal, I think he’s got more important things to worry about than the price of bread."

£1.00, according to Mahesh Wijsinghe, 27, of Station Square in Petts Wood said: "I believe it’s important for the Prime Minister to know as bread is essential, so if he doesn’t know that it’s worrying."

'Two for £1 in Morrisons,' according to Roy Scott, 74, of Hawthorne Road in Bickley said: "I am not surprised that David Cameron doesn’t know the price; I should think 70 per cent of the people in our area won’t know the price of a loaf of bread. I am surprised the Prime Minister even goes in to the supermarket, let alone knows the prices."

'I make my own,' says Ken Patel, 60 of Station Square in Petts Wood said: "He’s the Prime Minister his job is to know about nuclear weapons not the price of bread. One man cannot know everything in life."

75p, according to Natalie Littlewood, 24 of Holly Road in Orpington said: "I think it’s shocking, considering everything David Cameron is trying to put into action. It just goes to show he doesn’t understand what everyone else has to pay to get through the whole week."

£1.25, according to Javon Edwards, 30, Cowsden Road in Orpington said: "He’s the Prime Minister he should know the price of a basic item, bread is an essential item that is used on a daily basis."
