IT'S THE WEEKEND: New discoveries at gaming festival
I WAS recently granted the pleasure of attending the UK’s biggest game festival - The Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court in London.
This is where all of the big developers come to show off their new games and consoles.
There was also a retro area where they had pretty much every games console which has ever existed. Now, I may not be that old, but still seeing a PlayStation 1 brought back some memories of my early gaming days.
I was most excited about being able to play on the PS4 for the first time and, by the size of the queue, so were many other people.
As soon as I picked up the newly crafted and improved controller, I knew that the PS4 was going to be everything I thought it would.
Not only that, but the game this particular console was playing was Skylanders Swap Force. I wasn’t too sure of what to expect as it is a game aimed at younger children but it surprised me.
In fact, it surprised me so much I am actually thinking of getting myself a copy of the first Skylanders. It’s just like the old Spyro games on PS1 (that’s probably because Skylanders is part of the same series). My conclusion, if you like games like Jak and Daxter, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank etc. go and get this game. It would also make a great Christmas present for a younger child.
The only other game I played on in the PS4 area was the new Killzone game (at least I think it was… I was too engrossed in the game to actually find out what it was) which was fairly similar to every other FPS on the market nowadays. Obviously, it had upgraded graphics and whatnot because of the new system’s capabilities but it didn’t really have anything special that no other FPS’s have. Overall, it was a good game but nothing to get too excited about.
Continuing on the theme of PlayStation, not PS4 however, I played on Gran Turismo 6 (that’s the game I’m playing in the picture…). Well, more like sucked at GT6. I am notoriously bad at every Gran Turismo game I’ve played and this one was no different.
The one race I did attempt though, I chose a Lamborghini Countach (purely because there were no Aston Martins available on this particular game mode) and it turned out that every other person in the race had done exactly the same. I came last and hit every wall on the way around.
If the Gran Turismo games really are the best driving simulator then I am going to have fun getting my driving licence.
I also had a go at the new character creation mode on the Sims 4. I did initially try and make Jeff Bridges’ character from Iron Man 1 but that didn’t out too well so the session ended with me repeatedly hitting the randomize button until it created someone who looked utterly ridiculous and then left them on the screen for the next person to giggle at.
In other news, two games I have recently bought, GTA 5 (my new second favourite game, the first being Star Wars Battlefront 2) and Fifa 14.
I’ll talk about GTA 5 first. It’s already been out for more than a month so many of you will already know the main ideas.
For those who don’t however, GTA 5 is a game where you can do pretty much anything from bank heists to having a round of golf.
The map is absolutely massive. I think it is the biggest map for any game ever and it is covered in things to do, stuff to buy, items to collect, anything.
If you’ve played this game online (or at least tried to) this month, Rockstar have said that due to server issues earlier in the month, they will give each player who has taken part this month $500,000 in game which I think is awesome. Rockstar, you’re alright.
I also bought a copy of Fifa 14 which is just last year’s Fifa with new rosters and slightly different ‘arena’ mini-games. That aside, I would like to tell you that on my Newport County career with the help of a financial take-over trait thing, I have signed Fernando Torres and we are top the league. Look out Premier League, here comes the ‘Port.
