New development officially opened in Gaer

Two new shops were opened yesterday on Gaer’s Bassaleg Road on the site of a former garage.
A Spar store has been relocated from a smaller unit on Bassaleg Road, and now also houses the local sub-Post Office. A St David’s Foundation Hospice shop has taken a smaller unit next door.
And the Spar was officially opened by Newport’s mayor Cllr Cliff Suller at 9am. The charity shop opened an hour later.
He said Spar had shown a “great deal of faith in our city with your expansion”.
A Spar store has been based on Bassaleg Road for 50 years. Staff and residents petitioned for a new and bigger store to take the space of the empty garage last year when the Co-Operative mooted building a supermarket on the site. The Co-Operative eventually abandoned their plans.
Louise Studley, who works at the Spar and lives on Stelvio Park Road, said: “We are a community shop. Everybody gets on and it’s great. You can probably say to somebody: what bags do you want today? Or: oh, don’t forget your newspaper. And we know most of the people from living up here and all our kids go to the school up here.”
It currently employs 14 staff and more will be recruited soon. Store manager Julie Pocock said that she was hoping the footfall to the shop would increase from around 750 to “well over 1,000” a day.
Postal services are available from the Spar at any time it is open at either the Post Office inside the shop or at a designated counter outside normal opening hours.
The St David’s Foundation Hospice shop is the charity’s 37th store. The store’s manager, Alison Morgan, has moved from their shop on Commercial Street in Newport.
There is a new car park with 20 spaces in front of the new development.
And next door to the charity shop, local businesswoman Debbie Bevan opened her Vibe Hair Studio three weeks ago after she relocated from Cardiff. She employs three staff.
The Spar is open from 7am-11pm daily, while the charity shop is open from 9.15am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.
