A WOMAN who died after her car overturned in Risca on Thursday has been named.
Janette Sutherland, 48, of Ebbw Vale was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Police officers attended the accident involving a silver Peugeot 206 which happened on the northbound section of the A467 between the Full Moon Roundabout and Tesco at 5.20pm.
Police are appealing for information and specialist officers are supporting her family.
The incident, which happened at a time when traffic congestion is at its highest in the area, caused major delays on the A467.
Lorry driver Andy Jones, from Cwmfelinfach, waited six-and-a-half hours until the road was reopened.
“We only moved around 300 feet in that time,” said the 43-year-old. “I’ve worked on recovery before and from what we saw it looked like a fatality. There must have been around 70 other cars there - it was chock-a-block.”
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 5.20pm on Thursday, October 24, to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A467 at Risca.
“We sent three rapid response vehicles and one emergency ambulance to the scene, where sadly a woman was pronounced dead.”
If anyone has information about the collision they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 and quote log number 387 24/10/13.
