A MAN was killed when a runaway delivery van knocked him through the side of a Gwent house.

But he was not discovered until five-and-a-half-hours after the incident, and after emergency services had left the scene and the householder had returned home.

The tragedy unfolded at 1.30pm yesterday when a van rolled into the back of a house on Rhiw Parc Mews, Abertillery.

The owner of the house, Colin Morris, 30, came home to find the van in the back of his house.

According to Mr Morris, police and ambulance services were at the scene and had cordoned off the area, while structural engineers from Blaenau Gwent council had been to assess the damage to the house.

But when the owner was let into the house at 7pm to collect some clothes for the night, he found the body of a man in the kitchen.

"I couldn't believe it," said Mr Morris, "I was in utter shock. No one had seen him."

Mr Morris believes the man was walking past the house when the van hit him.

He said he must have been thrown 15 feet through the rear of the property.

"If I had only walked into town instead of taking the car it would have been outside my house and might have stopped the van," said Mr Morris.

Ok Kit in reply to your comment, what you can't see opposite colins house is that there is a very steep hill, and what happened was that the delivery driver of the van got out of the van to deliver something, parked on the hill and the handbrake failed causing it to roll down the hill where it collided with the man and colins house.

I live on a hill, when I park I turn the front wheels into the curb. I have had two cars written off by runaway cars. Why don't drivers use their common sense. This tragic accident could have been avoided by more careful parking on the hill.

I live only a street away from where the accident took place, and it was only a matter of time before something like this was going to happen. I thank my lucky stars as I only drove past the same spot, five minutes before the accident happened. I felt sick to the stomach when I saw the carnage first hand.

I understand that the van was not actually parked on the steep bit but actually on a relatively flat area further up but still failed to put his handbrake on and it ran backwards slowly then onto the steep part. The poor man was buried under 4 feet of debris so was not spotted after the house occupant was accounted for.

this is wot a good driver does turn his/her wheels darl. not all people do have the sence they was born with, another is to leave it in gear ie if nose of car/van pointing down hill leave it in revese gear it wont go no where apart from up which it cant do..
