LABOUR’s Omar Ali has won the Pill by-election by a large margin.
Mr Ali took the Newport city council seat, left vacant by the death of veteran councillor Ron Jones, with 500 votes.
Paul Halliday for the Welsh Liberal Democrats had 233 votes, Plaid Cymru’s Khalilur Rahman 167, and the Tories’ Zafar Ismail polled 155.
The by-election saw just 1,055 people turn out to vote.
Labour’s Cllr Jones had served as a councillor for almost 50 years, who died on August 27 – he had represented Pill for more than three decades.
