A YOUNG Newport fundraiser is “over the moon” to be crowned Mini Miss Heart of Wales, after beating off the competition at the pageant's final on Saturday night.

Maddalyn Cain-Smith of Beechwood Crescent, was crowned Mini Miss Heart of Wales in Cardiff’s City Hall this weekend.

The eight-year-old , who has never competed in a pageant before, raised a total of £550 for Tenovus, the pageant's charity. As a pupil of St. Patrick’s primary school, she organised a school bake sale and a wear something pink day for breast cancer awareness month. The busy eight-year-old is also a member of the Cwmbran Tenovus Choir.

Marrianne Cain-Smith, Maddalyn’s mother, said: “It was really lovely. She enjoyed it from start to finish.”

The pageant has three categories which include Mini Miss Heart of Wales (7-12-years-old), Miss Teen Heart of Wales (13-19-years-old) and Miss Heart of Wales (20+).

Miss Heart of Wales says it aims to showcase the exceptional women of Wales and support them in reaching their goals. There is no upper age limit, no weight or height restrictions and no previous modelling experience required.

There were three other girls in Maddalyn’s category.

“They all got on really well. It was really close between all the girls,” said Mrs Cain-Smith.

The next year will be a busy one for Maddalyn who will be invited to attend a number of charity events under her new title.

“She can’t wait. First thing she did this morning, was put on her crown. She’s over the moon,” said her mother.

Points were scored for different categories during the lead up to the final and then in an interview with a panel of judges on the day and a catwalk show in the evening.

Almost £15,000 was raised by the pageant finalists for Tenovus Cancer which helps, supports and treats cancer patients across Wales.

The event was hosted by Capital FM DJ Polly James and judged by a panel including Sarah Fleming, Miss Wales 2006, Paralympic gold medallist Aled Davies and Cath Jones who is a breast cancer patient and has received support from Tenovus services.

Jemma Lewis, from Port Talbot, was crowned Miss Heart of Wales and Courtney Yeap of Swansea, won the Miss Teen Heart of Wales.
