MORE than 2,000 people from the farming community attended the opening of the new £5million livestock market, near Raglan, yesterday.
The Monmouthshire Livestock Centre, at Bryngwyn, will replace the current market at Abergavenny, which is due to close on December 11, and also the former markets at Monmouth and Newport.
TV presenter and farmer Adam Henson opened the 27-acre site, which features a main 3,689 sq m building and a support building to house a ring, offices, 396 pens, toilets, lobby and café and parking for almost 160 vehicles.
The leader of Monmouthshire council, Councillor Peter Fox, said he was pleased to see the new market open, 15 years after talks were first held.
He said: “Farming has got be sexy, exciting and progressive and this is what the market is all about. Today starts a new chapter.”
