THE four Newport Rotary Clubs unveiled their charity clock at the city’s Kingsway Centre on Saturday.
It is based near the Bodycare store and was unveiled by Newport mayor Cllr Cliff Suller. Around 30 Rotarians and families attended.
The idea of the clock came about from Rotarian Lyndon Bowkett. The clock features a helter-skelter mechanism so children and parents can put coins into it and see them slide down.
The seven-foot-high clock, which has been built by Newport High School students with help from their teacher Mark van Ek, will encourage shoppers to donate funds to Rotary charities. Students from Coleg Gwent were helped by their tutor Gordon Collins to install the electrics in the clock.
Kingsway shopping centre boss Michael Hine, who is also a Rotarian, told the Argus in November he was pleased to be able to host the clock. Materials were donated by Gwent companies Davlan Construction, Griffiths Signs and Equipment, Monmouthshire Timber Suppliers, The Colour Centre and it was painted by Carole Parker.
