A BLACKWOOD make-up artist has started an online project where women reveal the depths of their make-up bag and their relationship to it.

Bethan James, 37, started the project to create debate about body image and the battle for perfection.

Two years ago, the mum seized an opportunity to enrol onto a makeup course at Cross Keys College. In April of this year she started her business, Betty Red Make-up. Her accompanying blog began around the same time offering far more than product reviews.

“I’m not your average beauty person so it was always going to be about a bit more than that,” she said. “I love looking great but you don’t need to do it all the time. You have to have some perspective.”

The six women Bethan has recruited for the project have very different experiences and stories to share.

Bethan said: “I couldn’t have planned it to be this good. It’s taken on a life of its own and the feedback has been great.”

Using the “what’s in your make-up bag” starting point, the posts share intimate insecurities, hang-ups or experiences the women have surrounding their body image.
