Millions to help boost language in school

MORE than £5 million will be spent on improving teachers’ Welsh language skills after the minister for education approved the decision.

Over £5.3 million has been allocated over three years to continue the Welsh language sabbatical scheme, which offers training to teachers and other staff who need the confidence and specialist terminology to teach, lecture or train through the medium of Welsh or bilingually, or teach Welsh second language.

The minister has also approved £300,000 over three years to provide Welsh-language training for practitioners working in English-medium non-maintained early years schemes like playgroups and nurseries.

The funding will help set up a new training programme in basic language skills called Un, Dau, Tri – Hwyl A Sbri, delivered by the University of South Wales with the six regional Welsh for Adults centres across Wales.

The National Day Nurseries Association Cymru and Wales Pre-school Providers Association will also visit early years settings to introduce children to the Welsh language and provide information to staff about the training available.

Unbelievable after today's PISA results.
Let's waste more money on a language that has no use beyond Offas Dyke. That is, the rest of the World!!
Scrap WAG and The Welsh language Act.
Lobby your MP Lobby your AM and if they don't like it, let's elect individuals who will represent the views of so many of us.
Are there any candidates standing? Here's my vote. How many other readers agree?

Now that's really going to help improve the welsh PISA rating! Improving maths and English as well as problem solving skills obviously isn't the way forward. I understand why welsh is something that pupils in wales should have access to but when there is less cash to spend, surely this is not a top priority!

This is the same WAG that pleads poverty and blames Westminster for all the ills here. What an insult to the people suffering in Wales' appalling health service. Total insanity.

That's the typical Labour attitude to public spending that got us to this mess in the first place. £5M would make a big difference placed somewhere else, like in Cardiac care where people are actually dying on waiting lists.

People of Wales do not be fooled by the Welsh Government propaganda that the Welsh Language should be promoted at all costs. If you really care about your great nation then you should study the facts and understand what damage forcing the welsh language onto it's people is doing.
Anyone who believes that it is the right policy to spend millions of pounds and dedicate endless resources is an enemy of Wales. A nation of over 3 million with a small minority of simple minded anti-english folk who would rather see the country be brought to it's knees than allow school children the freedom to decide whether they wish to learn Welsh or not.

What use will the welsh language be when there are limited employment oportunities within Wales for the current and next generation? Wales is slipping down the PISA ratings yet we continue to waste money in the wrong areas, I would rather a child of mine had a storng footing in English, Maths and Science than learn a language that has no bearing at all in todays world.
We should be aiming to attract the best teachers to Wales not those who simply know a bit of Welsh. The welsh language has been dead for a long time and its about time we let it go and stopped propping it up with tax payers money.
