THE Newport Night Shelter project received huge donations of toiletries, food and bedding thanks to members of the public helping through Gwent police.

Police community support officer Hayley Sutcliffe helped deliver around 25 large boxes of goods, which included about 100 toothbrushes, 100 tubes of toothpaste and 100 tins of food.

The gifts had all been dropped off by the public at Gwent police stations following an appeal on the force’s social media sites.

The night shelter project, which is run annually by volunteers, provides shelter for homeless people across 14 churches from November 25 to March 20. It gives shelter for 12 people a night.

The scheme also tries to rehome people for a longer period of time.

Following the appeal on Facebook, more than 780 people “liked” the post and people were also asking about volunteering with the scheme.

Anyone who wants to donate items, excluding clothing, can drop them off at Newport Central police station. Cash donations can be made by visiting www.newportnightshelter.org
