IT will be revealed tonight whether a chef who grew up in Caerleon has won BBC Two’s MasterChef: The Professionals.
Scott Davies, 27, said he was “always involved in the kitchen” growing up.
And viewers have been able to watch his culinary skills over the last two nights of the three-part final. The former Newport High School Old Boys rugby player left Caerleon Comprehensive School when he was 16 and moved to Scotland to attend catering college. Soon afterwards he started working in the Carnoustie Golf Links kitchens.
Then when he was 20, he worked in Melbourne, Australia for two years.
And he achieved three rosettes as a head chef, a marker of culinary excellence, when he was only 26.
His parents, Anne, who was a pharmacist, and John, a carpenter, also moved to Scotland from Wales shortly after he did and his brother, Stewart, now lives in Dundee.
Mr Davies has been the head chef at The Adamson restaurant in St Andrews for ten months – and although filming for MasterChef ran from April to July, he said the restaurant owners were grateful for the publicity.
And the television appearances have clearly made a difference. On a trip to Wales a few weeks ago, he was recognised at a Llanelli Scarlets rugby match.
He said: “It was really, really surreal.”
And hHe aspires to be the head chef of a Michelin-starred restaurant. He said: “There’s a lot of hard work to do to get to that level. But it’s all about getting the right team.”
It is the sixth series of MasterChef: The Professionals and it has been shown on BBC Two for six weeks.
And he battled past 29 other chefs to get into the final three.
In the first final episode, shown on BBC Two on Tuesday, the chefs were taken to Modena in Italy for four days to cook with top chef Massimo Bottura. Mr Davies said he “was an absolute legend”. Tonight there will be one final cook-off in the MasterChef kitchen to decide the champion.
