A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said the blaze was deliberate.
UPDATE: 8.31AM:
Eyewitness Sean Powell, 21, works at nearby Dale Motors. He saw black smoke while he was sat in his car this morning outside his office at around 5.50am.
He called his father, who then called the fire brigade and got down to the scene as quickly as possible.
Most of the fire has now been extinguished and crews are beginning to leave.
UPDATE 8.06AM:
50 firefighters are now at the blaze scene in Pill.
UPDATE 6.50AM:
A LARGE blaze is being tackled by firefighters in Coomassie Street, Pill, Newport.
Four engines and a hydraulic platform are being used to fight the fire in the old Handiland premises.
Dozens of firefighters are at the scene, and crews are using a "water curtain" to contain the fire and stop it spreading to nearby buildings.
The two-storey building is "well alight" and a second water bowser is being drafted in from Barry.
