THE cause of the fire in workshops near Tredegar House, Newport, is being investigated today.

Firefighters tackled the blaze at the units near the National Trust building after being called at around 9pm last night.

No-one was in the buildings and no-one was injured.

General manager at Tredegar House, Jo Cartwright said the units affected included one which belonged to 'Busy Bees', a patchwork and quilting shop.

Another was a candle and mug shop while a third was used as a summer catering unit and so was empty at the time of the fire.

Head of control at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Jennie Griffiths said a fire investigation officer will be attending the fire scene this morning to carry out the investigation into the cause.

She said the fire scene had been checked regularly since the fire was extinguished including a crew checking at 6am and a further check due to take place at 9.30am.

Crews from Duffryn, Malpas and Maindee attended the fire with two jets and two hosereels being used.

An aerial appliance was also used as a water curtain and crews later removed roof tiles to check for hot spots and fire spread.

National Trust Wales said Tredegar House would still be open today as the house and grounds were unaffected.
