CWMTILLERY Lakes have acheived the prestigious Green Flag Community Award from Keep Wales Tidy, in recognition of the high standards maintained at the nature reserve throughout the year.
Blaenau Gwent Council’s grounds maintenance section have worked closely with the Cwmtillery Lakes Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) to improve and enhance the area of natural beauty at Cwmtillery Lakes.
Their hard work has paid off as they were recently rewarded with a Green Flag Community Award and a new piece of commemorative artwork.
This year, Cwmtillery Lakes were amongst a record 61 parks and 56 community managed green spaces in Wales to receive the award.
The group are also celebrating the completion of a new bridge structure and decorative metal arches at the lakes, which aims to both commemorate the industrial heritage of the area and celebrate the transformation of the once industrial land into a nature reserve for the community.
Welsh artist Rubin Eynon worked with the CLEAN group to design the intricate metal work of the bridge’s arches, which incorporates the names of five local collieries including Sixbells, Vivian, Penybont, Cwmtillery and Roseheyworth as well as many mining-associated tools and other items.
Funding for the artwork was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund with support from the Forgotten Landscapes Project.
