A DISABLED woman was hand delivered a Christmas food hamper this week by volunteers from the King’s Church Jesus Cares campaign.

Olwyn Wildy, who has lived in Newport for 40 years, suffers from arthritis and finds it hard to get to shops due to a lack of bus routes near her house.

She requested the hamper after seeing the backing that the Argus was giving the Jesus Cares campaign and it was delivered to her on Tuesday morning.

The hamper – full of dry and tinned foods – is worth between £20 and £25.

Miss Wildy said: “What Jesus Cares do is lovely. With my disability and everything else it’s really nice to be given something. It really helps me as the only way I can get to shops is by getting a lift off someone or getting a taxi which is quite expensive.

“It’s a lot easier when someone helps you out like they have and it’s really good work that they do for everyone.”

Jesus Cares, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, started in 2009 as a result of community organisations contacting the Kings Church to ask for food for families they were working with, who had no money to feed their children.

So far 2,000 hampers have already been distributed to agencies across south Wales such as Teen Challenge, Solace, Gwent Probation and Big Issue, who will disperse the hampers to clients in need with the aim of delivering more than 3,000 hampers.

The hamper was delivered to Miss Wildy personally by two volunteers from King’s Church, based at Lower Dock Street, Newport.

They were Norma Martin, 72, and Angela Chisman, 70, who have been helping out for years at the church.

“We do this because we love Jesus and his message is to help people,” said Mrs Chisman. “It’s nice to help people and see what it means to them.

“There seems to be more and more people these days that need our help and we seem to be distributing further afield all the time.

“When you give one of these hampers to someone and see what it means it makes you appreciate that you’re in a position to be able to help.”
