ARGUS ARCHIVE: 100 years ago - French cigarette smuggler charged in Newport

WARNINGS were issued for parents to be vigilant after a four year old Abertillery girl died after falling into a bath of scalding water. This was the second tragedy of the same nature in two weeks.

A fatality occurred at Bedwas colliery, when a local man became entangled in the spindles of the machinery that he was operating.

A new school-room at St Margaret’s Church, Pontymister, was opened by Lord Tredegar.

A French man was charged in Newport with smuggling offences. He had brought cigarettes from France into the town with the intention of selling them for profit.
