THE FIRST series of handmade Victorian Christmas craft events were held in December in Blaenavon and attracted over 700 people.

Families took the opportunity to get into the spirit of Christmas by taking part in activities at Blaenavon World Heritage Centre every Saturday in December.

Santa was also sat in his Victorian themed grotto to meet children and give them a gift.

Children made traditional Christmas decorations and gifts such as dolls, wreaths, and Christmas lantern and plates to take home.

The centre’s staff wore Victorian Costume for the event and guests were able to browse the variety of stalls, made up of local businesses, for gift ideas.

The manager, Tim Davies, explained that the event was a first for the heritage centre and it has been a big success.

He said: “We themed it in the Victorian era as the centre’s building is from that time and we have had a good response from the public.

“With over 700 people attending from miles around as well as local residents, it has been great and we will definitely look in to doing it again next year.”

Blaenavon resident, Barrie Evans, attended with his wife and son and explained that he enjoyed the hand carved wooden Christmas decorations were good, while cupcakes being sold were delicious.

He added: “Any event that brings people and interesting products into the town is brilliant.

“Similar events through the year would make the centre a more integral part of the community.”

The Heritage Centre’s cafe also provided seasonal music and served a Christmas menu, as well as homemade mince pies and mulled wine.
