A GRANDFATHER delivered his new grandson in the bathroom of their Newport home yesterday as Gwent welcomed New Year’s Day babies.

Tara Williams, 20, of Fernside, Lliswerry, gave birth to Zain, 7lb 2oz, at 7.22am, the delivery lasting just minutes with her father Terry helping.

Mr Williams, 39, said: “It was more common sense than knowledge really. I have seen my four children being born. I just had to make sure the baby’s airwaves were clear and that he was crying.”

Paramedics arrived almost immedidately and Tara’s younger brother Callum, 17, got to cut the umbilical cord.

Ms Williams said: “ I was only in labour for about ten to 15 minutes. This is my third baby; I have Tyrell, three, and Carvell, two.”

Samantha Morris, 27, of Llanwern, and husband Paul Morris welcomed boy Charlie Paul Morris, 9lb 8oz, at 1.05am, the second baby of six to be born at the Royal Gwent Hospital.

She said: “He’s our first baby. The birth went really smooth it took about 12 hours in labour.

“I had to be induced because he was 14 days overdue.”

Nicola Ryan, 29, gave birth to her first child Charlie George Clews, 8lb 7oz, at 5.34am.

Ms Ryan, of Bettws, said: “I was quite nervous but the birth went quite quickly only five-and-a-half hours. He’s quite a poser like his dad.”

Kelly Fry and her fiancee Aaron Wood, of Ystrad Mynach, welcomed their third child Kameron, 5lb 10oz, at 5am at the Royal Gwent.

Mr Wood said: “The baby wasn’t due until January 10 but Kelly was a high risk of cord prolapse so we came in. I was at the birth – there all the way. We have two other children Keian and Krystal who are one and two.”

Three babies were born at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. At 12.52am, a baby girl born to Rachel Williams, of Cwmcarn, weighing 6lb 3oz. Cole Meaker was the second baby to be born. Parents Stephanie Ryall, 21, and partner Liam Meaker, 22, of Langstone, Newport, were ‘overwhelmed’ to welcome Cole into the world at 5.14am, weighing 8lb 2oz. The Argus did not have the details for the third baby.

Miss Ryall and Mr Meaker, an accounts co-ordinator, said: “He arrived nine days late but we are so overwhelmed and thrilled to finally meet him.”
