THE Environment Agency has issued new flood warnings for areas across Gwent, including the Wentlooge Levels in Newport, the Usk Estuary at Crindau and Malpas Road and the Caldicot Levels.
The warnings have been issued as Wales braces for the highest tide to hit the country since 1997.
According to a South Wales Fire and Rescue spokeswoman, the flood warning received for the Wentlooge levels could affect up to 3,500 properties, while possible flooding of the Usk Estuary at Crindau and Malpas Road in Newport could affect up to 600 or more properties.
Another flood warning for tomorrow morning is for the Usk Estuary at Monmouth and Old Town Docks in Usk and the Usk Estuary at Caerleon and the Caldicot Levels.
Other flood warnings include one for the River Wye at Chepstow and another near Tintern.
Natural Resources Wales warns high tides combined with forecast gale force winds could see a storm surge that would raise the level of the sea by up to a metre above high tide. This surge could cause overtopping of defences in places.
While the threat extends along the entire Welsh coastline, Natural Resources Wales said Crindau in Newport along with parts of West and North Wales are particularly at risk.
