Newport councillor brands Labour colleague 'arrogant'

A BACKBENCH Labour councillor in Newport has launched a stinging attack on one of his own party’s cabinet members.

Stow Hill councillor and former mayor Miqdad Al-Nuaimi has made a series of allegations against education cabinet member Bob Poole, calling him arrogant and prone to make rash judgements unbecoming of his position.

The attack, addressed to Cllr Poole but sent by email to all Newport councillors, is possibly the most significant public row among the Labour group since it took over the authority in May 2012.

Cllr Al-Nuaimi sent the email last Friday after the cabinet member declined to answer questions over the controversial decision to merge the Gaer infant and junior schools.

He told Cllr Poole: “Your arrogant and woefully inadequate response to my question has clearly demonstrated your unwillingness to be accountable.

“Your failure to substantiate statements you made shows that you are prone to make rash and unfair judgements, unbecoming of the responsible position you hold.

“You also lack the sensitivity and graciousness to admit to mistakes.”

Cllr Al-Nuaimi’s statement came in response to a series of written answers from Cllr Poole to questions over the decision for children at the Brynglas autistic spectrum disorder centre not to have lunch with Welsh medium school pupils in the same building.

Cllr Poole told Tory councillors David Fouweather and David Atwell that a new ASD school was proposed at Gaer Infant school site, but said there was a considerable delay in amalgamating the Gaer schools as a “result of significant objections, many of which were by your colleagues”.

It was his impression, he added, that many of the objections were from “colleagues to those in opposition to the proposal”.

He said he wouldn’t comment on Cllr Al-Nuaimi’s criticisms while the Stow Hill councillor also made no further comment when approached by the Argus.

At least Miqdad Al-Nuaimi is willing to show some guts and tell it like he sees it. Fair play.

Sounds like a spat - one of the risks of using e-mails.

Having said that the lack of accountability and transparency is a fundamental problem amongst the folks running the Civic panto these days.

Well done Councillor Al-Nuaimi for the comments below:

My only issue would be that this could be the same comment directed at quite a few people of late in the cabinet over the past twelve months or so.

The quicker people in the cabinet take away their own self importance and worry about the cushy allowances they get and actually worry about what is best for Newport the better.

I still await Chris Evans or some other new Labour councillors with vision to step to the front and challenge the leadership of Councillor Bright.... please.

Some great comments on Al Nuami's stand. He is one of the better cllrs we have and i agrree with him about Poole. It will take time for the new cllrs to do the same, as they have to learn the game in the Civic. Replacing Bobby will not be easy as no-one wants the job.

I led the campaign against the amalgamation of the 2 schools, and was shocked by the Council's absolute refusal to listen to anyone. Over 450 people objected on many grounds to the amalgamation, but they pushed on anyway. They managed to persuade the Minister to approve the proposal by making promises about what we could expect at the new school which I hear they are already failing to keep.

And now, to be in essence accused of being a mouthpiece for the Conservatives, well, I'm flabbergasted. I'm not a Tory voter, but they showed more concern for our community than our Labour Ward Members (Cllrs Thomas, Whicutt and Wilcox) did. They listened to the arguments we made against the proposals and agreed with us, not the other way around. The Libdems did too. Now I know that many will say that they did so just to have a dig at the Council, but even Labour members (especially Cllr Al-Nuaimi) also agreed with us and fought with us.

In a few years time, when the next elections take place, please remember the arrogance and ignorance of our Labour Council and vote accordingly...
