ANGER is growing tonight about the way gang leader Joland Giwa was relocated to Newport.

Local councillors say they, like MP Paul Flynn, had not been consulted on the move.

Councillor for Stow Hill ward, which includes York Place, Miqdad Al-Nuaimi said:

“I’m quite concerned that something like this should happen. As a local councillor I learned of the news from the Argus.

“I was really concerned as this is in an area where we have people who have had more than their fair share of anti-social behaviour.

“I would feel let down as a resident in York Place that I was not told about it.”

Mr Al-Nuami said several residents had contacted him and that he had since written to the local neighbourhood policing team.

Opposition leader Councillor Matthew Evans said: “Quite frankly I’m pretty shocked and appalled this can happen in this day and age- that a known convicted criminal can be relocated to Newport without people knowing about it.

“I just find it totally unacceptable. It’s very frustrating.”

Councillor David Fouweather said: “I’m surprised they have housed in Newport when he doesn’t have any links to the area.

“I would like to know if the leader of the council knew and if so what has he done to ensure the safety of the public?"
