FRIENDS and family of a terminally ill Newport man are continuing their fundraising as they aim to raise enough money to send him to Mexico for life-changing treatment.

Robert Harrhy, 47, has suffered from two types of cancer. The first, which was located in his bone marrow, has been cured by doctors.

But medical experts said another form, the extremely rare large B-cell lymphoma, has been found in his stomach, liver and groin and is inoperable.

Mr Harrhy has researched alternative treatments and is aiming to go to the Oasis of Hope Cancer Hospital in Mexico – at a cost of £35,000.

Before that, the next stage will be a three week course of IV Vitamin C injections in Bristol at the cost of £13,000.

Due to the cost of the treatment, friends and family are busy fundraising to try and give Mr Harrhy the best shot at survival.

Nanaimo Higginson, 39, his sister, will be cycling from Brecon to Cwmcarn on Saturday, January 25.

“I’ve raised over £300 so far and that should go up,” she said. “Rob has basically been told he can’t be helped by doctors but there’s no way he’s going to take that. The research he’s put in is amazing and it’s very positive. He’s still laughing and fighting. He’s said that if he tries everything and he can’t be helped then at least we know he has tried.” Other events planned are an evening with ex-snooker player Jimmy White, on Friday, February 21, all tickets have sold out, with a £3,000 target.

As well as this, a ladies night will be held on Friday, March 28 at the Riverside Tavern, Newport.

A charity fundraiser held on Saturday, January 11, saw Eggheads star CJ De Mooi play a few frames of pool which raised £4,500.

Leanne Mitchell, 33, is Mr Harrhy’s niece, and has played a vital part in organising a lot of the fundraisers – yet is still coming up with ideas for more. She said: “Rob is a fighter and as the only male in the family, he is someone that we all look up to. He gave me away at my wedding and we’re doing all we can to help him. He’s showing tremendous bravery and we’re all proud of him.”
