A SEX attacker who laughed in his victim’s face and tried to silence her with threatening messages has been jailed for 16 months.

Benjamin Colley, 23, of York Place, Newport, was drunk when he assaulted his victim in the early hours.

The court heard he had then laughed in her face afterwards.

He later sent her messages ending with a mobile call in which he swore and threatened her again.

The woman, who had been left shaken and frightened, said in a victim impact statement: “I feel unprotected and demoralised and out of my depth.”

Colley, who was living in Exeter at the time of the offences, admitted sexual assault and witness intimidation.

Judge Erik Salomonsen sentenced Colley at Exeter Crown Court.

The judge said: “This was a serious sexual assault compounded by witness intimidation.

“Those who intimidate witnesses must expect immediate custody.”

Speaking about the assault, Alistair Verheijen, prosecuting, said: “She said no and the assault started. She told him to stop but he used his strength. It went on for a few seconds with her shouting for him to stop throughout.”

He added: “She heard him say he could do anything he wanted. He then laughed in her face.”

When arrested later, Colley told police she had lied and later sent the threatening messages.

David Evans, defending, said the sexual offence was out of character but Colley previously had anger control problems and wanted help for his drug abuse.

He said he accepts his behaviour was inexcusable and the threats were made when he was in despair about the case.

Why is this being allowed to happen? There is already a bail hostel in the area and a 'half way' house in the 'hotel' and the main road. Why Have Gwent Police and the local council sanctioned the congregation of known criminals within a residential area?

That is my question too he got a light sentence there sexual assault and witness intimidation 16 months is a joke. No wonder sexual offenders do it with these people giving out stupid sentences. What about the victims and the affects it has on them. Pondlife he is and he will get 3 square meals a day and a roof over his head and be protected from the other prisoners and he will be back on the streets within 8 months.

I will call him what I want because there is never any excuse or justification for this sort of crime. Thousands of people get absolutly hammered every weekend, imagine what it would be like if the justification of a sexual assalt is just because you are drunk and got told no, I get rejected almost everytime I go out but that doesn't mean I attack them. What your saying is absolute tripe and you should be locked up in the cell with him.

The sentence is probably lighter because it might not have been actual rape doesn't atually say in the report. 16 months is a bit short will be out in 8 months, should be atleast 18 months inside and then sign sexual offenders register, made to report to a police station once a week and be tagged so they know his wearabouts at all times. Hars??? Oh hell yeah but why not, it's the only way someone is going to learn and a deterent to others.

We are way way to soft on criminals, they are just living in the fantasy that they can get away with anything and the law is allowing it, jail is considered too easy by the criminals, I bet you asked a crim back in the start of the century what they prefered I don't think that they would say jail. I'm sorry but having access to the comforts of home like tv in your cell and hot shower everyday isn't much of a punishment as for most of them the only difference is they don't have thier freedom for a few months and no nagging from the missus.
