NEWPORT teen photographer Ieuan Berry was revelling in the success of his debut photography exhibition last night.

The 17-year-old from Maindee, saw more than 70 people attend his first exhibition ‘High Tide’ at Newport Central Library in John Frost Square.

The self-taught photographer, who aims to capture the ‘unseen’ city through his lens, showed ten of his most striking images of the recent high tides and flooding which struck Newport at the beginning of the year.

The A-level student who studies at St Julian’s sixth form said: “I’m feeling good. I’m really pleased how it’s all turned out-it’s better than I could have imagined. Tristram Booth and Annette Wells have helped me quite a lot with the exhibition.

“I wanted it to look modern, clean and tidy and it has turned out that way. I’m not nervous about the exhibition – the things that I have seen and experienced while taking photographs in Newport mean that I have no fear.”

On choosing the images he said: “I had a few in mind that I wanted to be included in the show, and Tristram and Annette helped me to pick the final few. I would say the Newport Wave is my favourite.”

Ieuan, who got his camera after winning an Argus competition in 2010, has recently discovered that the flash and lens on his camera are not working.

Ieuan hopes that the sale of his photographs for £10 each will raise enough money to repair or replace his camera.

Ieuan was given backing by Newport councillor for Rogerstone Chris Evans and Cllr Debbie Wilcox, for the Gaer, who helped him to secure the exhibition.

Cllr Evans said: “This is a great opportunity for Ieuan. There has been a big social media campaign inviting people to come along to the show and it is good that Ieuan as a young artist has been embraced by Newport.

“Over 120 people registered for the VIP list for the opening show and it’s great to see people have come along to support him.”

Ieuan hopes to secure a place at Queen Mary University of London or the London School of Economics to study photography next year.

The Argus delivery boy also plans to set up a market stall at Newport’s indoor market to display his work and has launched a calendar of his shots from his work as a printer at The Print Shop in Church Road.

Ieuan is also involved in a project with the council where he will be supplying them with 100 images of Newport at its best.

The show will run until February 26.
