POLICE forces across Wales will run a driving safety campaign for young people in February.

The All Wales Young Driver Education and Enforcement Campaign aims to make drivers aged between 17 and 24 aware of risks.

In 2012, young people represented 12 per cent of the population in Wales but were involved in 24 per cent of all the crashes in which people were killed or seriously injured.

Officers from the collision investigation unit will attend sixth form classes and colleges to deliver a presentation, ‘licence to kill’. It outlines potential driving dangers such as not wearing a seatbelt, driving too fast, carelessly or under the influence of drink or drugs.

There will also be police patrols in accident hotspots.

The roads policing unit has also teamed up with the Institute of Advance Motorists (IAM). Drivers can be referred to the IAM for further training, free of charge.

Sgt Bob Witherall, of the roads policing unit, said: “It’s a tragedy when anyone is killed in a road traffic collision, but even more so when a young life is cut so short. We hope that by engaging with young motorists, we can raise awareness of the risks that put their own life, as well as the lives of others, in danger.”
