THE Environment Agency has issued new flood warnings for Newport ahead of this evening’s high tide.

Flood warnings are in place for the Usk Estuary at Riverside, Caerleon, Crindau and Malpas Road, Uskmouth and Old Town Docks, St Julians, Maindee, North Liswerry, Spytty and Pill.

High tide at Newport is expected to reach 8.2 metres at 8.30pm tonight and 7.6 metres at 8.45am tomorrow morning.

Saturday morning’s high tide at Newport reached a level of 7.9 metres at around 8am.

Natural Resources Wales is urging people to remain vigilant as strong winds are forecast to coincide with Saturday evening’s high tide, making conditions dangerous.

The warning comes even though the impact from this morning’s high tide were less severe than forecast.

The strong south westerly winds are forecast to affect Wales throughout this afternoon and evening and there is a risk they will combine with the high tide on Saturday evening and cause flooding, particularly in the Newport area.

People are strongly advised to stay clear of promenades and sea fronts as they could be swept away by large waves or hit by debris.

A Natural Resources Wales spokesman said: "Natural Resources Wales’ staff are continuing to check coastal and river defences are in good working order, clearing debris and working closely with local authorities, police and other partners to help ensure communities are prepared for any potential flooding."
