NEWPORT’S Transporter Bridge has inspired many visual artists to attempt to capture its image – in paint, on film and even model form.

And one of the most striking recent renderings of the Grade One-listed structure will now have pride of place in the bridge visitor centre.

Artist Henry Williams, a former fine art lecturer at Coleg Gwent, presented an oil painting of the bridge to the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge (FONTB) group.

The painting, around 1.5 metres long and one metre deep, features the bridge in the context of the River Usk and its surroundings, with an angler in the foreground.

Friends group chairman David Hando said Mr Williams has given the painting on an indefinite loan.

“It’s a beautiful painting, very striking,” said Mr Hando.

“He wanted it to be somewhere people could see it and appreciate it.”

The visitor centre, on the Pillgwenlly side of the river, is staffed by volunteers and opens throughout the year.

“We get lots of people from all over the world coming to see the bridge, so the painting will have a large audience.” said Mr Hando.
