HIGH winds battered across Gwent last night but the weather is expected to improve across the weekend.

A large conifer fell onto the back of three houses on Dean Street in Maindee, Newport at around 12.30am this morning. Residents were all in at the time but were uninjured.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended to a collision on the A467 Northbound Bassaleg where a car had collided with a tree. There were fallen trees across Gwent including one blocking Belmont Hill in Caerleon and one near Church Lane in Brynmawr.

The Environmental Agency have relaxed their orange alert for the River Wye and Monnow with winds and showers due to ease.There are still road closures across Monmouthshire including the A4042 at Llanellen and the M48 Severn Bridge.

The Met Office has predicted a dry but cold night tonight with icy roads/pavements in some areas where surfaces remain wet. A dry day will then follow on Sunday with much lighter winds and some showery rain is forecast during Sunday night.
