A MEAT distributor stored unsafe meat in his chiller as a favour to a friend Cwmbran Magistrates heard.
Shane Ellis, 31, of Heol Llanelli, Pontyates, Llanelli, pleaded guilty to keeping for sale food intended for human consumption that was deemed unsafe. Monmouthshire County Council’s food hygiene officers visited Little Mill Meat and Game, Pantypwyddyn Farm in April 2011 and found two goat and two lamb carcasses hanging without official stamps.
Ioan Gealy, prosecutor for the council, said: “All slaughtered animals require official stamps.
“The inspectors decided the meat should be destroyed. To his credit Mr Ellis had the meat destroyed voluntarily.”
Aled Owen, for the defence, said: “The risk to the public in this circumstance was certainly limited. It was not likely it would have ended up on any of our plates.
“The animals were killed by a farmer for his own use.”
Charges of illegal slaughtering of the lamb and goat meat were dropped.
Ellis received a conditional discharge with costs of £1,000 and a surcharge of £15.
