NEWPORT’S main post office is set to move, officials revealed yesterday.

The Post Office plans will mean that its current base at 9 Bridge Street, Newport, will be relocated 750 metres away to Unit 19 Sovereign Arcade at the Kingsway Centre, where it would be known as the Newport Post Office.

Should the plans go ahead, following a six-week public consultation period, facilities would include seven counter positions; three self-service kiosks; a dedicated mails acceptance point, and two private consultation rooms.

The relocation would also make the new premises more easily accessible, with a level entrance to premises with automatic door, with low-level counters and writing desks.

A six-week public consultation on the move will begin today and will close on April 2, with customers asked to give their opinions on the proposed new service, which would see them benefit from service in large, modern, open-plan premises ideally located for shops and local transport links.

The new Newport Post Office would offer customers the same wide range of services with no reduction in opening hours.

It would open 9am to 5.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 9.30am to 5.30pm on Tuesdays.

Roger Gale, Crown network general manager, said: “We are committed to maintaining Post Office services in Newport and we hope that this proposal will be welcomed by our customers.”
